Beyond the Shots: Creative Approaches to Photography

The Centre for Digital Learning (CDL), in collaboration with the Photography Club of Christ University Pune Lavasa, successfully organized a hands-on workshop titled “Beyond the Shot: Creative Approaches to Photography” on 10th December 2025. The event aimed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of photography while encouraging them to explore creativity through both theoretical learning and practical application. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from students across various disciplines, reflecting the growing interest in visual storytelling and digital media.

The session began with an inaugural address by the faculty coordinator of CDL, who emphasized the importance of visual literacy in the age of digital communication. The Photography Club president then introduced the objectives of the workshop and welcomed the resource persons, who brought extensive experience in professional photography and digital imaging.

The first half of the workshop focused on building a strong theoretical foundation. Participants were introduced to essential concepts such as the exposure triangle—aperture, shutter speed, and ISO—and how these elements work together to create a well-balanced photograph. The speaker also discussed various shooting modes, framing techniques, composition rules like the rule of thirds and leading lines, and the role of lighting in enhancing mood and texture. This theoretical session helped students understand the science behind capturing a compelling image, preparing them for the hands-on segment that followed.

After a short break, the workshop transitioned into an interactive practical session. Participants were divided into small groups and guided through live demonstrations using DSLR and mirrorless cameras. They experimented with camera settings, explored natural and artificial lighting, and practiced framing techniques in outdoor and indoor setups across the campus. The Photography Club members and mentors provided personalized assistance, allowing students to clarify doubts and apply theoretical concepts directly to their practice.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the creative challenge, where participants were asked to capture images that told a story using the techniques they had just learned. This activity encouraged students to think beyond technical precision and focus on emotion, perspective, and narrative. The images captured during this challenge reflected a blend of technical skill and artistic expression, showcasing the participants’ growing confidence behind the lens.

The workshop concluded with a reflection session, during which participants shared their experiences and insights. Many expressed appreciation for the balance between theoretical clarity and practical exposure, noting that the workshop helped them understand photography not just as a hobby, but as a powerful medium of communication. Certificates of participation were distributed, and the organizers thanked everyone for their support in making the event a success.

“Beyond the Shot: Creative Approaches to Photography” successfully achieved its objective of equipping students with foundational photography skills while inspiring them to experiment creatively. The event highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering digital skill development and providing students with opportunities to explore new forms of creative expression.
