MELANGE 25
Mélange 2025, a Model United Nations conference, was organized by the School of Business and Management – BBA on November 27th and 28th, 2024, at CHRIST College Pune. The two-day event brought together 60 school students from across Pune city to participate in a diplomatic simulation centered on the theme “Proxy Conflicts of the 21st Century.” The conference was conducted as an extension activity of the department, aimed at engaging school students beyond the university community and fostering early exposure to higher-order learning environments. The primary objective was to develop critical thinking, public speaking, negotiation, and global awareness among school students by immersing them in structured debates on contemporary international issues, while also nurturing interest in leadership, diplomacy, and responsible citizenship.
The conference featured four committees that operated throughout the two days: the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the All India Political Parties Meet. Each committee conducted two sessions, one on each day of the conference, allowing delegates to engage in sustained deliberation on issues related to the overarching theme.
In the United Nations General Assembly, delegates discussed international responses to proxy conflicts and their implications for global peace and security. The committee provided a forum for participants to represent various nations and negotiate multilateral approaches to addressing indirect warfare and third-party interventions in regional conflicts. The United Nations Security Council focused on immediate threats to international peace arising from proxy warfare, with delegates examining case studies of contemporary conflicts and debating potential intervention strategies and peacekeeping measures.
The United Nations Human Rights Council addressed the humanitarian consequences of proxy conflicts, including displacement, civilian casualties, and violations of international humanitarian law. Delegates explored mechanisms for protecting vulnerable populations caught in the crossfire of proxy wars and discussed accountability measures for actors involved in such conflicts. The All India Political Parties Meet provided a domestic perspective, with participants representing different Indian political parties and debating India's foreign policy approach toward proxy conflicts in South Asia and beyond.
The conference followed standard Model United Nations procedures, with each committee session featuring formal debate, moderated caucuses for focused discussion, and unmoderated caucuses for informal negotiation and coalition-building. Delegates were expected to research their assigned countries or political positions beforehand and prepare position papers outlining their stance on the committee's agenda. Throughout the sessions, participants presented speeches, raised points of order and information, and worked collaboratively to draft working papers and resolutions addressing various aspects of proxy conflicts.
The event commenced with an opening ceremony on November 27th, which included welcome addresses and an introduction to the conference theme and procedures. Over the two days, the four committees conducted their sessions simultaneously, with each committee having dedicated spaces within the CHRIST College campus. Faculty members and experienced Model UN practitioners served as chairs and moderators for each committee, guiding the proceedings and ensuring adherence to parliamentary procedure.
The conference concluded on November 28th with a closing ceremony where committee chairs presented their reports summarizing the deliberations and outcomes of each committee. Awards were distributed to delegates for various categories including best delegate, high commendation, and special mention based on their performance, research quality, speaking skills, and diplomatic conduct throughout the conference. The event successfully provided participating school students from Pune with hands-on experience in international diplomacy, debate, negotiation, and collaborative problem-solving within the framework of simulated United Nations proceedings.
