Organized by the Department of English & Cultural Studies, the Quality Improvement Programme, “Sensory Pedagogy, AI, and Research in Practice,” addressed a vital contemporary question: how can the humanities remain deeply human in an increasingly automated academic world?
As emerging technologies reshape teaching, learning, and research, educators explored how experiential and sensory-rich methodologies can transform classrooms while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and research-oriented pedagogical innovation. Across three days, sessions moved from reflective explorations of perception to practical digital design. Participants examined how food narratives, acoustic memory, tactile experiences, and play-based learning can become powerful tools for critical inquiry and narrative construction. These approaches encouraged faculty to reconsider familiar classroom practices, demonstrating how everyday experiences can serve as starting points for sophisticated academic investigation. The atmosphere became particularly dynamic during a collaborative AI laboratory session, enriched by global perspectives through the participation of an expert from Okayama University. Faculty members actively experimented with AI-driven tools, exploring ways to process, interpret, and creatively represent sensory experiences. The session demonstrated how artificial intelligence can complement rather than replace human interpretation, enabling educators to connect cultural knowledge, technological experimentation, and meaningful classroom engagement. By the final showcase, theoretical concepts had evolved into tangible academic resources. Faculty members developed concrete blueprints for interdisciplinary coursework and classroom activities, incorporating multisensory strategies designed to strengthen student engagement, reflection, collaboration, and analytical rigor. More importantly, the programme encouraged a fundamental shift in how educators understand perception: not simply as a personal experience, but as a legitimate and transformative method for critical research and knowledge production. This inventive spirit reflects the distinct character of CHRIST University’s Lavasa Campus.
