World Humanitarian Day

Every year on 19th August, World Humanitarian Day reminds us of the courage, compassion, and commitment of people who work to support communities during times of crisis. It is a day to recognise humanitarian workers, volunteers, and everyday individuals who extend help, hope, and solidarity to those in need. The Centre for Counselling and Health Services (CCHS), CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, conducted an online awareness initiative to mark World Humanitarian Day and encourage students to reflect on what it means to be a humanitarian in everyday life. The initiative highlighted the 2026 theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity & Empowering Local Communities,” emphasising the importance of connecting global support with local action. Humanitarian work is not only about responding to major disasters or emergencies. It is also about empowering communities, encouraging self-reliance, and creating systems where people can support one another with dignity and respect. As part of the online initiative, CCHS shared an informative social

media post and Instagram story to engage the university community. The content focused on compassion, solidarity, support, inclusion, courage, and hope. Through simple visuals and reflective messages, students were encouraged to think about the ways they can contribute to a kinder and more supportive environment.The social media content also presented a simple yet meaningful question: “What does being a humanitarian mean to you?” This question invited students to look beyond formal definitions and consider how humanitarian values can be reflected in their own actions. Offering help to someone who is struggling, listening without judgement, standing up for others, including people who may feel left out, and showing kindness are all meaningful expressions of humanity. The initiative further reinforced the idea that small actions can create a larger impact. A supportive conversation, a helping hand, a thoughtful gesture, or simply being present for someone can make a difference. Humanitarian values can therefore be practised not only during emergencies but also in classrooms, campuses, workplaces, families, and

communities. The message of the initiative was also reflected through the motto, “One World. One Humanity. One Future.” It reminds us that despite differences in backgrounds, experiences, and circumstances, we share a collective responsibility towards one another. Building a compassionate world requires cooperation, empathy, and a willingness to act when support is needed. The initiative also honoured those who risk, serve, and stand with humanity during difficult circumstances. Their dedication demonstrates that humanitarian action requires courage, resilience, selflessness, and a strong commitment to human dignity. Recognising their efforts encourages us to appreciate the value of service and inspire similar attitudes in our daily lives. Through this online initiative, CCHS sought to create awareness while encouraging meaningful reflection among students. Social media provided an accessible platform to share the message, engage audiences, and connect a global observance with everyday acts of kindness and responsibility. World Humanitarian Day ultimately reminds us that humanity begins with how we treat one another. When we choose compassion over indifference, support over silence, and solidarity over division, we contribute to a more inclusive and hopeful society. Every individual has the ability to make a difference. Together, through small acts and collective action, we can help build a world where no one is left behind.
