Building Stronger Teams: An Experiential Team Building Programme for First-Year Students

The Team Building Programme brought together students from 1 BSc Computer Science & Data Science, 1 BSc Economics & Statistics, and 1 MSc Data Science for an engaging and energetic experience centred on collaboration, communication, creativity, leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving. Designed as an experiential learning initiative, the programme provided students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom while developing essential interpersonal and teamwork competencies that are valuable for both academic and professional growth. One of the key highlights of the programme was the opportunity for students from different academic programmes to interact and collaborate. Working in mixed teams encouraged students to move beyond their usual peer groups, appreciate diverse perspectives, and develop new connections. The programme created an inclusive environment where students with different experiences, skills, and strengths could contribute towards shared objectives. The programme consisted of six interactive and experiential activities, each designed to develop specific dimensions of teamwork. The Classroom Heist challenged students to analyse clues,

communicate effectively, manage time, and solve problems collectively. Participants had to combine logical reasoning, strategic thinking, observation, and teamwork to arrive at solutions. The activity demonstrated the importance of sharing information and listening to different ideas when working towards a common goal. The University of the Future activity encouraged students to think creatively and make collective decisions. Working together, teams explored ideas, negotiated priorities, and developed a shared vision. The activity helped students understand the importance of consensus-building, decision-making, innovation, and effective communication within a team. Performance-based challenges added creativity, energy, and entertainment to the programme. Students were encouraged to express themselves confidently,

showcase their creative abilities, and support their teammates. These activities provided opportunities to step outside their comfort zones while developing confidence, adaptability, spontaneity, and interpersonal communication skills. An important component of the programme was the emphasis on shared leadership and responsibility. Students took on diverse roles such as captain, strategist, communicator, timekeeper, performer, negotiator, and motivator. This allowed participants to identify and utilise their individual strengths while recognising the importance of every team member's contribution. The experience demonstrated that effective leadership is not limited to one person but can emerge through collaboration, delegation, communication, and mutual support. The programme also celebrated the diverse strengths demonstrated by students throughout the activities. Recognition was provided through awards including Best Problem Solvers, Most Entertaining Team, Best Team Players, Best Performers, and Best Leader. These categories ensured that different forms of contribution were acknowledged, from analytical thinking and leadership to creativity, performance, cooperation, and team spirit. Beyond competition and entertainment, the programme provided students with meaningful opportunities to practise skills in realistic, dynamic situations. They experienced the importance of managing disagreements, adapting strategies, communicating under time constraints, supporting teammates, and taking responsibility for collective outcomes. Such experiential learning allows students to understand teamwork not merely as a concept but as a practical skill that develops through participation and reflection. Overall, the Team Building Programme successfully created an inclusive, energetic, and student-centred learning environment. By bringing together students from different academic programmes and engaging them in purposeful collaborative challenges, the programme strengthened peer interaction and encouraged a culture of cooperation. The programme reinforced the idea that successful teams are built through trust, communication, creativity, adaptability, shared leadership, and respect for diverse perspectives. Through learning, competing, creating, and solving problems together, students gained valuable experiences that can support their academic journey, future professional careers, and continued development as confident and collaborative individuals.
