Workshop on “SQL for Finance
The Department of Commerce, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune, organized a workshop on “SQL for Finance: Working with Financial Data” for students of MSc Global Finance and Analytics. The workshop was conducted with the aim of introducing students to SQL and highlighting its growing relevance in finance, analytics and other data driven roles. As the finance industry becomes increasingly dependent on data, professionals are expected to work with large volumes of information and use technology effectively for analysis and decision making. While a strong foundation in finance remains essential, knowledge of tools such as SQL can give students an added advantage when entering the corporate environment. The workshop was therefore planned as an introductory and practical session to familiarise students with one of the technical skills increasingly used across financial and business functions. The session was conducted by Mr. Yogesh Murumkar, Corporate Trainer and Chief Executive Officer of Bharat Software Solutions, Pune. With more than 11 years of experience in the IT and training domains, Mr. Murumkar has worked with organisations including Capgemini India and has extensive experience in technologies such as SQL, Python, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence,Machine Learning, Power BI and Tableau. He has also trained more than 2,500 participants across various technology and data related areas. The workshop introduced students to the basic concepts of SQL and relational databases and provided an understanding of how structured information is stored and accessed. Students were introduced to basic SQL queries and their use in retrieving, filtering and sorting data. The session also demonstrated how SQL can be applied to business and financial datasets to obtain relevant information for analysis. A key feature of the workshop was its practical orientation. Rather than treating SQL only as a technical or programming skill, the session connected the concepts to situations that students may encounter in finance and business roles. Students were encouraged to think about the information they needed from a dataset and then understand how SQL could be used to retrieve it. This helped them appreciate the connection between a business question, the underlying data and the analytical tool required to address it. The interaction with an industry professional also gave students an opportunity to understand the expectations of the workplace and the importance of developing technical skills alongside their finance knowledge. The session encouraged students to ask questions and engage with the practical applications of SQL, providing an initial foundation for further learning in data analytics and business intelligence. The workshop also reinforced the importance of continuous learning and upskilling in the rapidly changing finance industry. As financial roles increasingly involve data management, analytics and technology, familiarity with tools such as SQL can contribute to students’ professional and corporate readiness. Overall, the workshop provided students with a useful introduction to SQL and its applications in finance. It served as an opportunity to connect classroom learning with industry practices and encouraged students to explore how technology can complement their knowledge of finance and analytics. The Department of Commerce looks forward to providing students with further opportunities to develop practical and industry relevant skills through similar initiatives.
