An introduction to Graph Theory
Fr. Antony Puthussery CMI, CHRIST University,
Bangalore was the resource person who gave an introduction to Graph Theory for
Data Science students at CHRIST, Lavasa in August 2019. They were informed that
the first paper on graph theory came in 1835 which is a year after Graph theory
was initiated. At present papers are available for Data Science, Data
Analytics, Business Analytics etc.
Through a
world map and some connected points, the students got an idea of network
connection, connection of servers, nodes (points), connection (branches), etc.
they were given detailed information about applications of graph theory. They came
to know that Google Map shows connections (paths/branches) from one location (point/node)
to another. It uses GPS (working in the front end) and calculation of the
fastest and shortest path (working in the back end). Although these maps have
written-algorithms (30 years back) but can be modified anytime.
It was
interesting to know that Social Media also shows connections of different
people (points) from any part of the world. They were also briefed about Face
Recognition which represent connections from one part of face to another as
detected by any security system. The study of Face Recognition is a part of
Image Processing. Fr. Antony Puthussery mentioned that Neural Network is used
for optimisation and it has a molecular graph. He also spoke about Machine
Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which is the seen application of Graph
theory where one can use data and convert it into knowledge to analyse it
further. The Data science students also got a very information about Graph,
which is a collection of two things namely points/nodes (very important) and
lines/connections. In all it was a very informative session and the students
thanked Fr. Antony Puthussery for sharing the information. The lecture was
coordinated by Dr Samiksha Shukla, HOD, Data Science.
