Update on Orientation Program for Law Students

31st July 2019 and 1st August 2019

The students were briefed by Adv Udit Seth about various legal procedures to be kept in mind and further organized systemically at the outset before setting up anything.

There was a detailed analysis about different types of law such as corporate, civil, criminal etc and a basic distinction between them was also discussed.

It was brought to their knowledge how satellites and other objects in space have their own jurisdiction (Space Law) and it cannot be acquired by anyone.

Basics of Law were aptly defined as guiding rules and regulations for people, objects and events. Such rules decide what is permissable and what is not.

The students were informed about the importance of Constitution and how it is a primary document of the country. Under no circumstances should the Constitution be ever disregarded and as a true citizen everyone is expected to abide by the rules and regulations mentioned in this legal document. Suitable current examples were given to drive across the point.

The students were told that Judiciary resolves issues between two or more people or states or organizations etc.

The students were informed about Bare Acts (any act in it's purest form and how it is passed by the court of law). They came to know about Commentaries (the interpretations that come up while enacting laws). The Law students were told about various text books to be studied during the course of five years along with Law journals (the articles written on legal matters by various researchers).

The students showed keen interest in getting to know reasons for taking up law as a profession. They were curious to know how lawyers are different from other professionals. They unanimously agreed that a lawyer has to give precise and exact answer within a given span of time without revealing unnecessary details.

As part of an interactive activity the students formed groups and discussed on various topics.

The students were advised about the movies or videos to be watched and what kind of books to be referred while analyzing a case.

In an effort to encourage students and instill confidence in them the students were given instructions about how to approach various moot courts and debating competitions. The difference between a moot court and a debate was distinctly defined. They were given tips on ways of dealing with a moot court.

They were informed about different types of preparations of a memorial like IRAC, FIRAC and CREAC.

It was suggested to set up different societies such as Moot Court, Human Rights, MUN and Debating Society.

Above all Adv Udit selected an example and explained how each court has it's own jurisdiction and which court has to be approached according to the given case because each case has different interpretations.

The entire session was extremely informative and will definitely prove beneficial for the students in the long run.
