Session on Gender Equity

On October 21, 2024, the Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the Centre for Counselling and Health Services (CCHS), hosted an engaging session on Gender Equity at the Management Block, Room No. 2206. The session was led by Ms. Sheba Solomon, a seasoned counselor and expert in mental health and gender issues. The event aimed to raise awareness about gender equity and its importance in fostering fairness and inclusivity in academic and professional spaces.

Ms. Solomon began the session by clarifying the difference between gender equality and gender equity. She explained that while gender equality focuses on providing identical resources or opportunities to all, gender equity addresses systemic barriers and inequalities, ensuring that individuals have fair opportunities to reach their full potential. This distinction set the stage for an insightful discussion on addressing gender biases and creating more inclusive environments.

The discussion explored the importance of establishing gender-sensitive environments within educational institutions and workplaces. Ms. Solomon highlighted strategies for challenging and dismantling stereotypes, fostering an inclusive mindset, and empowering individuals to actively contribute to equity. She encouraged participants to reflect on their own biases and provided practical steps to promote gender equity in their daily lives.

A significant focus was placed on the impact of gender equity on mental health and well-being. Ms. Solomon pointed out that systemic barriers and biases can take a toll on individuals' mental health, limiting their confidence and opportunities. She offered actionable advice to address these challenges and emphasized that promoting equity benefits not only individuals but also the larger community.

The session was interactive, with participants enthusiastically contributing to discussions and sharing personal experiences. This exchange of ideas created a dynamic and engaging atmosphere, allowing attendees to connect deeply with the topic. The open forum format encouraged active participation, enabling attendees to voice their thoughts and seek guidance on addressing gender equity issues in their own communities.

Practical guidance was provided on implementing gender equity initiatives, starting with education and awareness. Ms. Solomon emphasized that sustainable change requires a commitment to challenging biases and creating inclusive environments. She encouraged attendees to take proactive steps, both individually and collectively, to promote equity in their institutions and beyond.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, during which participants posed thoughtful questions and sought advice on applying the principles of gender equity in various contexts. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the relevance of the topic and the engaging approach of the speaker. Participants expressed that the session was not only informative but also inspiring, providing them with actionable insights to implement in their personal and professional lives.

The session reflected the Department of Commerce’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and promoting social responsibility. It served as a platform for meaningful dialogue, emphasizing the significance of equity in shaping a more inclusive and supportive society. The collaboration with CCHS highlighted the shared dedication to addressing critical societal issues and empowering individuals to effect positive change.
