Alumni Day of Data Science
On January 25, 2025, Christ University Pune-Lavasa Campus celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its establishment with a grand Alumni Meet. Organized by the Data Science Department, the event provided a platform for alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and share valuable insights with current students. The meet was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing alumni from across the globe to participate, whether in person or virtually. The event started at 9:00 AM and ended at 11:30 AM. The primary objective of the event was to inspire students, provide guidance on career pathways, and bridge the gap between academic learning and professional experiences.
The event featured several distinguished alumni who shared their experiences across various fields. One alumnus, currently working as a Research Associate, discussed the applications of Machine Learning (ML) in satellite imaging and geospatial data analysis. He highlighted the significance of internships in enhancing research skills, interpreting academic papers, and applying theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. He also emphasized the importance of soft skills such as adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication in making a smooth transition from academics to the corporate sector.Additionally, he encouraged students to pursue extra certifications beyond the curriculum to stay competitive in the growing ML field in India.
Another engaging session involved three MSc graduates, currently employed as Senior Data Engineers and a Cloud Engineer, who shared their career experiences and insights. They spoke about the necessity of continuous learning, often dictated by the demands of projects in their respective roles. They also underscored the importance of networking in securing placements and career advancements. The discussion addressed the challenges of the corporate world, including managing stress, workload, and technical obstacles, and how a hands-on approach and proactive learning mindset helped them navigate these difficulties. They reinforced the significance of practical experience over theoretical knowledge and urged students to work on real-life projects to develop essential industry skills.
An alumnus who pursued a career in academia as an Economics Lecturer shared insights into the teaching profession. She emphasized the passion required for teaching, the ability to simplify complex concepts, and the need for continuous learning. She also pointed out that patience and adaptability are essential qualities for educators. Another alumna spoke about her transition from data science to human resources, discussing how extracurricular activities had helped her develop communication and networking skills. She advised students to remain open to exploring different career paths and to embrace opportunities that enhance interpersonal abilities.A Software Engineer specializing in Generative AI provided insights into the advancements and growing relevance of AI-driven technologies. He highlighted the need for students to stay ahead by keeping up with emerging fields and trends. The discussion also explored the intersection of analytics, machine learning, and economics, where alumni emphasized the importance of balancing technical expertise with domain knowledge to drive innovation and career growth.
The Alumni Meet underscored several key takeaways for students. Continuous learning through certifications and additional courses is vital for staying competitive. Building strong professional networks plays a crucial role in career progression. Practical experience through hands-on projects helps develop essential skills.
