Gearing up for Placement: Alumni Strategies for Success

The Department of Statistics & Data Science organised an engaging and insightful alumni interaction session for the students of 5BSc Data Science and 5BSc Economics & Analytics. The session was conducted by Mr. Arun M, an alumnus of the MSc Programme at Christ University, who is currently working as a Senior Data Analyst at Bajaj Allianz. The session aimed to inspire students, provide practical guidance for placements, and share first-hand insights into building a successful career in the data analytics and data science domains.

Mr. Arun began by motivating students to approach their academic journey and career preparation with focus and dedication. He stressed the importance of building a strong foundation in technical skills, highlighting SQL as a critical tool for data handling and analysis. According to him, proficiency in SQL not only helps in day-to-day data tasks but also forms a key requirement in most data-related job profiles. He encouraged students to engage in continuous practice and apply their learning through projects, assignments, and internships.

The session also provided a detailed overview of the placement process, explaining the various stages students can expect. Mr. Arun outlined aptitude and logical reasoning tests, technical assessments, and domain-specific evaluations, emphasizing that understanding each stage helps students prepare strategically and improve their performance. He provided tips for approaching each type of assessment, shared insights on common challenges, and suggested ways to strengthen weaker areas before appearing for placement tests.

Another key focus of the session was professional networking and online presence. Mr. Arun highlighted the importance of maintaining an updated LinkedIn and Naukri profile. He explained how consistent updates, proper keyword optimization, and showcasing projects can significantly improve a profile’s visibility to recruiters. He also advised students to leverage networking opportunities, connect with professionals in their field, and actively participate in industry forums and online communities.

Mr. Arun further discussed certifications and portfolio building as tools to stand out in the competitive job market. He recommended pursuing certifications such as cloud computing and other relevant technical credentials while emphasizing the importance of building a portfolio that demonstrates practical application of skills through projects, case studies, or competitions.

Towards the end of the session, he shared insights into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented in modern companies, stressing the need for logical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability to rapidly evolving technologies. He encouraged students to focus on conceptual understanding, critical reasoning, and practical application rather than merely following trends.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students actively engaged with Mr. Arun to clarify doubts about skills, certifications, career planning, and industry trends. The session was highly motivating and informative, providing students with practical advice, actionable strategies, and a clearer perspective on how to navigate their future careers in data science and analytics.
