Introduction to Research & Path to Projects and Patents

The “Introduction to Research & Path to Projects and Patents” session, organized by the Research Club in collaboration with the Centre for Academic and Professional Support (CAPS) and the School of Business & Management – BBA at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, was conducted on 11th October 2025 from 10:30 AM to 12:15 PM. The session featured Dr. Parameswaran S, Associate Dean, and Dr. Purnendu Bikash Acharjee, Head of Project Funding and Patents, as the speakers. It aimed to provide students with a clear understanding of research, its scope, and its significance in career development, as well as practical insights into projects and patents.

The session began with an introduction to the concept of research by Dr. Parameswaran S. He emphasized that research extends beyond laboratory experiments or scholarly publications; it is a structured process of inquiry, problem-solving, and evidence-based exploration. They highlighted research as a critical tool for academic growth, fostering innovation, enhancing critical thinking skills, and contributing to societal progress. The discussion illustrated that research has relevance across disciplines—from science and technology to social sciences and arts—making it an essential skill for students pursuing diverse career paths.

Following this, Dr. Parameswaran elaborated on the research process in detail. He  outlined the sequential steps involved: identifying a research problem or topic, conducting a comprehensive literature review, defining objectives, selecting appropriate methodologies, gathering and analyzing data, and drawing meaningful conclusions. To ensure clarity and relatability, each step was supplemented with real-life examples and practical scenarios. This approach helped students understand how theoretical research concepts are applied in practical contexts and encouraged them to think systematically about their own research ideas.

A significant portion of the session focused on the practical application of research in professional and industry contexts. Dr. Parameswaran explained that research is not limited to academic purposes but is also instrumental in solving real-world problems, improving operational processes, and generating innovative solutions. By linking research to tangible outcomes, the speakers encouraged students to appreciate the broader impact of research on society and the economy.

The session also provided an overview of the college’s Research Club, which serves as a platform to nurture a research culture among students. The speaker discussed the club’s initiatives, including workshops, guest lectures, inter-college competitions, and collaborative research opportunities. Students were informed about how participation in these activities could enhance their knowledge, enable networking with faculty and peers, and support the development of innovative ideas.

In the second session, Dr Purnendu  introduced the concept of patents, explaining their significance in protecting original inventions and intellectual property. Students were encouraged to explore the possibility of converting innovative ideas into patentable projects. This segment added a legal and entrepreneurial dimension to the discussion, making it particularly relevant for students interested in startups and innovation.

The session ended with an interactive Q&A segment, where students actively participated, asked questions, and shared their perspectives. This engagement highlighted the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for research and innovation. Overall, the session successfully inspired students to recognize research as a dynamic and impactful pursuit, equipping them with knowledge and motivation to explore research opportunities and contribute meaningfully to their academic and professional journeys.
