Learning From Experience: Alumni Session on System Science

Department of Statistics & Data Science organized an engaging and insightful alumni interaction session for the students of the first-year MSc Data Science (MSCDS) on 1st October 2025.

The guest for the session was Mr. Akshay Gangadhar, a distinguished alumnus of Christ University, who has established himself as a skilled professional in the field of System Science. Having graduated from Christ with a strong foundation in data-driven technologies, he has worked across diverse domains, gaining rich experience in analytics, artificial intelligence, and industry applications of data science. His presence served as an inspiration for the newly inducted postgraduate students who are at the beginning of their academic journey.

Mr. Akshay structured his talk around three major themes: career building in data science, the importance of continuous learning, and bridging the gap between academics and industry expectations. He highlighted the dynamic nature of the field and emphasized that students should focus on strengthening their fundamentals in statistics, machine learning, and programming, as these skills form the backbone of data-driven problem-solving.

He introduced the subject of System Science by demonstrating a research paper showcasing its real-world applications, providing students with a practical perspective on the topic. He encouraged them to make the best use of projects, internships, and hackathons, which serve as valuable platforms to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. The interactive segment of the session was particularly enriching. Students asked questions about career opportunities, certifications, programming languages, and emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and big data. Mr. Akshay addressed each query thoughtfully, offering both technical insights and career guidance.

He also shared his personal journey towards pursuing a Ph.D. in System Science, highlighting the motivations and experiences that inspired him to take this academic path. A key takeaway from his talk was the emphasis on adaptability and lifelong learning. He pointed out that while tools and technologies evolve, the ability to think critically, analyze data, and derive meaningful insights remains the most valuable skill. He motivated the students to develop problem-solving abilities and maintain curiosity, as these qualities will help them stay ahead in a competitive industry. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from the Department, expressing appreciation to Mr. Akshay for taking time out of his professional schedule to interact with the students.

The alumni session proved to be a motivating experience for the students, inspiring them to explore System Science as a potential specialization. It also introduced them to how the dual-degree MSc programme offered by Christ University, Pune Lavasa Campus, can serve as an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the world of System Science.
