Importance of Goal Setting in a Student Life
As part of the continuous efforts by the Grooming and Personality Development Committee to enhance the personal and professional competencies of students, the School of Business & Management (BBA), CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized a session titled “Importance of Goal Setting in a Student Life” on 8th October 2025. This session was one among a series of workshops designed to equip students with vital soft skills and life skills essential for holistic growth and future readiness.
The resource person for the session was Dr. Chetan Dixit, Assistant Professor, School of Law, who engaged the audience with his unique storytelling approach and humor-driven teaching style. His presentation focused on how setting clear, actionable goals plays a transformative role in shaping a student’s journey—academically, personally, and professionally. He emphasized that having defined goals gives direction, builds discipline, and creates a sense of purpose that fuels motivation and achievement.
Dr. Dixit illustrated the concept through a captivating story about zebras and lions. He narrated how, in the wild, lions initially found it difficult to hunt zebras because they all looked similar and blended into their surroundings. However, when humans placed identification marks on a few zebras for research purposes, the lions could easily target and hunt them. Through this engaging allegory, Dr. Dixit highlighted how clarity and identification—symbolic of goal setting—make it easier to focus and act decisively. The story served as a metaphor for life: without distinct goals, individuals often blend into the crowd and struggle to achieve clarity in their ambitions, whereas defined goals help them stand out and succeed. The session was highly interactive, filled with anecdotes and humor that kept the students actively engaged throughout. Around 145 first-year BBA students attended the session, participating enthusiastically in the discussions and reflections. Dr. Dixit also encouraged students to apply the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) framework while designing their personal and academic goals.
The event coordinators, Dr. Biplab Roy and Dr. Purnendu Bikash Acharjee, ensured smooth organization and student participation. The session significantly contributed to students’ understanding of self-awareness, planning, and prioritization, aligning with NAAC Criterion 5 (Student Support and Progression) and Criterion 2 (Teaching-Learning and Evaluation). It also supported the graduate attributes of CHRIST University such as self-directed learning, effective communication, and reflective thinking, while linking with SDG 4 – Quality Education.
Overall, the session was impactful in fostering motivation, focus, and personal growth among students. It reinforced the belief that goal setting is not just a skill but a mindset that helps individuals convert aspirations into accomplishments. The initiative proved to be an inspiring start to the committee’s series on personality development and life skills enhancement.
