Session on From Awareness to Action: Achieving Gender Equity to Eradicate Sexual Harassment

The School of Commerce, Finance & Accountancy at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus in collaboration with OIA (Office of International Affairs), organized an insightful and socially significant session titled “From Awareness to Action: Achieving Gender Equity to Eradicate Sexual Harassment.” Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Gender Equality, the session reflected the institution’s commitment to fostering inclusive, safe, and equitable educational spaces that empower every individual to thrive with dignity and respect.

Gender equity has long been recognized as not merely a policy requirement but a foundational value that shapes progressive institutions and responsible societies. While awareness about gender discrimination and sexual harassment has increased in recent years, the real challenge has been translating awareness into meaningful action. The session aimed to bridge this gap by moving beyond theoretical discussions and encouraging practical, informed, and collective responsibility in addressing gender-based issues within academic and professional environments.

The keynote speaker for the session was Dr. Onyeka Okongwu, Lecturer and Director of the Law Clinic at Liverpool Hope University, UK. With extensive academic and practical expertise in law, gender justice, and human rights, Dr. Okongwu brought a global perspective to the discourse on equity and institutional accountability. She shared valuable insights into the structural and cultural factors that perpetuate gender inequality and highlighted the importance of legal frameworks, institutional policies, and community engagement in combating sexual harassment.

During the session, Dr. Okongwu emphasized the need for proactive institutional mechanisms, transparent grievance redressal systems, and gender-sensitive leadership. She discussed the role of universities in not only complying with legal mandates but also cultivating a culture of respect, empathy, and zero tolerance toward harassment. Real-world case references and comparative international perspectives enriched the discussion and enabled participants to understand both global best practices and local challenges.

The interactive nature of the session encouraged active participation from students and faculty members. Participants reflected on their roles as responsible stakeholders in creating safe campuses and workplaces. The discussion also addressed misconceptions surrounding sexual harassment, the importance of bystander intervention, and the necessity of continuous awareness programs to sustain long-term change.

The session successfully created a platform for dialogue, reflection, and action-oriented thinking. It reinforced the idea that achieving gender equity requires consistent effort, accountability, and collective commitment. By equipping participants with knowledge and practical perspectives, the event contributed to strengthening institutional values aligned with equality, justice, and human dignity.

Overall, the program served as a meaningful step toward transforming awareness into actionable change, reaffirming the university’s dedication to promoting gender equity and eradicating sexual harassment within and beyond the campus community.
