Adventure Trekking
Lavasa Trekkers, in collaboration with the School of Business & Management – BBA, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus – ‘The Hub of Analytics’, organized an experiential learning activity titled “Adventure Trekking – An IKS Initiative: Learning Leadership and Strategy through the Legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj” on 08th February 2026 from 04:30 AM to 04:00 PM at Sinhagad Fort, Pune. The activity was conducted as part of the Academic Year 2025–26, focusing on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and experiential learning through historical and strategic exploration.
The trek was coordinated by Mr. Alanso Mathew, Dr. Saran Murali, and Dr. Shine Raju Kappil, with the support of Lavasa Trekkers. A total of 20 BBA students actively participated in the event, with one student volunteer assisting in coordination. The journey commenced early in the morning at 04:30 AM from the Central Block, with students and faculty traveling by CHRIST University bus to the trekking location. The group reached the base point of Sinhagad Fort at approximately 06:30 AM. After a brief orientation, the participants began the trek, which took approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top. The trekking experience required physical endurance, teamwork, and determination, fostering resilience and group coordination among participants.
Upon reaching the fort, students were given time to rest and refresh before beginning the historical exploration. Mr. Alanso Mathew and Dr. Saran Murali provided a detailed explanation of the historical significance of Sinhagad Fort, emphasizing its strategic location and role in Maratha military history. The guides highlighted how the fort served as a critical defense point due to its elevated terrain and natural fortifications, enabling effective surveillance and defense during battles.
The session particularly focused on the leadership, strategic thinking, and military planning of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Students learned how Shivaji Maharaj utilized geographical advantages, guerrilla warfare techniques, and strong organizational leadership to successfully defend and expand his kingdom. The discussion also included references to key historical figures associated with the fort, including trusted ministers and military leaders who contributed to the administration and strategic success of the Maratha Empire.
Participants were guided to various important locations within the fort, including historical monuments, watch points, and strategic defense areas. These visits helped students visualize the practical application of military strategy and governance. The activity effectively connected historical knowledge with contemporary leadership principles such as strategic planning, situational awareness, adaptability, and team coordination.
The trek also provided an opportunity for experiential learning beyond the classroom, allowing students to engage with India’s cultural and historical heritage. It reinforced the importance of Indian Knowledge Systems in understanding traditional models of leadership, governance, and sustainability. The Adventure Trekking activity successfully achieved its objective of integrating physical activity with historical and strategic learning. The initiative provided students with valuable insights into leadership, teamwork, and decision-making while fostering appreciation for India’s rich heritage. The experience contributed to holistic student development by combining academic learning, cultural awareness, and experiential engagement.
