WORKSHOP ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND IP MANAGEMENT FOR START-UP

The School of Business and Management (MBA) organized a Workshop on intellectual property rights and IP management for start-up in CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus on 29th October 2021 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM


The session was conducted with an aim to add value to the knowledge of the students in the area of Intellectual Property and the rights associated with it. All the faculty members were present in this session. The speaker for the event was Dr Becky M Thomas. There were 75 students present. The session started with a welcome address by Ronit Kumar and Geraldin Renisha who introduced the speaker. The core topic of discussion for the workshop was Intellectual Property Rights.


It was an engaging and thought-provoking session. The students were given an introduction to Intellectual Property and a brief overview of the types of intellectual property rights. Dr Thomas explained how intellectual property came into the picture, why it is important for a start-up business and the main base for intellectual property is the creation of an idea or a new innovation. She gave real-life examples and shared her life experiences pertaining to the topic. She discussed the bifurcation of industrial property rights and copyrights.


Dr Thomas made the students aware of patents – their meaning, the filing process, government grants the IP, and its utility. She introduced, the Patent Act, composition, fulfilments, duration, provisional application, and infringement. She elaborated on the scope of the copyright act, the rights and ownership, provisions, and infringement. She discussed the penalties and exception cases too. She gave the students a case study to analyze and identify the use of copyright. She clarified what trademarks are and how it differs from service marks and the entire process of registration. The students also got to know about the trade secrets and how they work in the entrepreneurial world. At the end of the session, Dr Becky made the students aware of various career opportunities in the field of intellectual property rights. The talk not only motivated the students to know more about the topic but also inspired them to look into it and dig deeper in order to gain professionalism.


The talk was followed by a Q/A session. The students were actively participating throughout. The session ended with Geraldin Renisha giving a vote of thanks. All in all, the talk was very informative and very helpful for all the students in their future business endeavors.

The session was very informative, students learned about trademarks, its meaning, how it differs from service marks, and the entire process of registration, and the session dived into what trade secrets are and how they work in the entrepreneurial world. It will be very helpful for all the students in their future business endeavors.
