INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OLDER PERSON 2021

Around 40 CSA Volunteers of CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus decided to observe the International Day for Older Persons on 1st October 2021.


The International Day of Older Persons is observed on 1st October each year. On 14th December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 1st October as the International Day of Older Persons. The day aims to spread awareness about the need for health provisions and social care for the elderly. The number of elderly people worldwide is expected to more than quadruple over the next three decades, reaching more than 1.5 billion by 2050.

The day started with the volunteers assembling on campus and getting briefed about the various activities and tasks for the day. All the equipment being carried was sanitized and the group set out for the nearby Dasve Village. In accordance with the theme for 2021 “Digital Equity for all Ages” We requested all the older persons to assemble at the village school. This was smoothly facilitated by the assistance of Mr Ali and Mr Javed who had commendable rapport with the villagers. The opening remarks by the CSA coordinator set the tone for the rest of the function.


The student CSA volunteers of CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus then spoke to the assembled older person and the students about the use of digital media in day to day life, this was in Marathi and Hindi and thus could be understood by all. The sarpanch of the village spoke and was highly appreciative of the efforts and the activities of the volunteers and suggested that these activities should be an ongoing interaction between the villagers and the volunteers. This was followed by the talk again in Marathi by the Chief Guest, the Manager of the local branch of the Union Bank of India. He spoke about UPI and safe banking and digital transactions.

To mark the event as also to spread environmental awareness a small tree plantation drive was also carried out. Light snacks were distributed to all who had assembled and to the school children. The volunteers also spent some time at the school with the children and interacted with them. The event concluded with the hope that it was of use to the audience at both extremes of age.
