Industry Spotlight: A Session by Hiren Shah
An insightful Industry Connect Session was organized on 8th November 2025 for the final-year students of the M.Sc. Data Science program. The session was led by Mr. Hiren Shah, Program Manager at Microsoft, who brings with him nearly two decades of rich experience in technology, leadership, and project management. The objective of the session was to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practices, while also motivating students to embrace lifelong learning in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Mr. Shah commenced the session by inviting students to share their thoughts and questions, creating an interactive and engaging environment. His approachable communication style and real-life experiences immediately connected with the audience. He emphasized the importance of being “always open to learn and stay grounded,” highlighting that humility, adaptability, and continuous learning are the key pillars of long-term professional growth.
During the discussion, Mr. Shah provided valuable insights into the current industry scenario, specifically mentioning that Microsoft had laid off over 15,000 employees in 2025. He explained that such events reflect the dynamic and transformative nature of the technology sector, particularly under the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Rather than viewing these developments negatively, he encouraged students to perceive them as opportunities for skill enhancement and adaptation. He stressed that AI should be seen as an enabler—an intelligent assistant that amplifies human capabilities rather than replacing them.
Mr. Shah elaborated on how AI tools are being used in real-world organizational contexts to improve efficiency, extract meaningful insights, and support strategic decision-making. He reassured students that while automation might redefine job roles, it will simultaneously create new avenues for innovation and human–AI collaboration.
Another significant part of his talk focused on Quantum Computing, which he described as the “next big leap” in computational technology. He explained its potential to revolutionize fields such as data security, optimization, and scientific research, and urged students to keep themselves informed and future-ready in this emerging domain. When addressing the qualities of Gen Z professionals, Mr. Shah appreciated their creativity, enthusiasm, and technological fluency. However, he advised them to cultivate patience, consistency, and a long-term perspective to achieve sustainable success. He further compared the production and service sectors, stating that while the production industry offers stability and technical depth, the service sector provides broader exposure, cross-domain experience, and accelerated learning—making it an ideal starting point for early-career professionals.
Drawing from personal reflections, Mr. Shah discussed the relationship between luck and hard work, citing the film “Luck by Chance” to illustrate that success comes to those who are prepared and persistent. He also shared his admiration for startups such as Urban Company and Zomato, praising them for combining innovation with social impact by creating accessible employment opportunities.
In conclusion, Mr. Shah recommended the book “Hit Refresh” by Satya Nadella, noting its themes of empathy, transformation, and personal growth—values that align with his own professional philosophy.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A and left students deeply inspired. It successfully achieved its objective of connecting classroom learning with real-world insights, motivating participants to stay grounded, embrace adaptability, and prepare for the evolving future of work driven by AI and emerging technologies.
