Certificate Course on IBM Cognos Analytics
The Certificate Course on IBM Cognos Analytics was a comprehensive five-day skill development programme designed to introduce BBA (First Year) students to the world of business intelligence and data analytics. The course aimed to equip students with industry-relevant skills that are increasingly required in modern business environments where data-driven decision-making plays a critical role. IBM Cognos Analytics is a globally recognised enterprise-level business intelligence platform used by organisations for reporting, data visualisation, and AI-powered analytics. By learning this platform, students gained exposure to how organisations convert raw data into meaningful insights that support strategic planning and operational efficiency. The programme was structured thoughtfully to combine two days of intensive hands-on practical sessions with three days of guided asynchronous learning, ensuring both interactive engagement and flexible self-paced learning.
The first two days of the programme focused on live practical training sessions where students participated in interactive, hands-on activities using the IBM Cognos platform. These sessions were designed to provide experiential learning and to help students become familiar with the interface and core features of the software. Trainers guided the participants through the process of connecting data sources, preparing and transforming datasets, and building data models. Students also learned how to design professional dashboards and analytical reports that can effectively present business insights. The training emphasised real-time practice, enabling students to work directly with the software while following guided demonstrations and exercises. Through this approach, students gained confidence in navigating the tool and applying analytics techniques in simulated business scenarios.
During the live sessions, practical examples from different business domains such as finance, marketing, retail, and human resource management were discussed. This helped students understand the practical relevance of analytics tools in solving real organisational problems. They also explored the principles of effective data visualisation, learning how charts, graphs, and dashboards can be used to communicate insights clearly and support managerial decision-making. By the end of the hands-on training sessions, students had developed a strong foundational understanding of IBM Cognos and its capabilities.
The remaining three days of the programme were designed as asynchronous learning modules that allowed students to reinforce and extend their knowledge at their own pace. Students were provided with recorded lectures, guided practice materials, datasets, and structured assignments to deepen their understanding of the platform. These activities encouraged independent learning and helped students explore additional features such as AI-assisted insights, trend analysis, and best practices in data storytelling. The asynchronous format enabled students to revisit concepts, practice repeatedly, and gradually build their analytical skills.
The training programme was delivered with the support of experts from Vaasu Solutions, who enriched the sessions with practical insights and real business datasets. Their industry experience helped bridge the gap between academic learning and professional application. As part of the course completion requirement, students were asked to submit assignments and complete a project-based assessment. In this final task, students created interactive dashboards and analytical reports using IBM Cognos. They analysed datasets, generated insights, and interpreted results within a business context. This project-based approach ensured that students were able to integrate both their technical knowledge and analytical thinking skills.
