Guest Lecture on Cyber Crime and Cyber Law

The Cyber Law Committee of Student Bar Association under School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organized a Guest Lecture on the topic "Cyber Crime and Cyber Law" 13th October 2021 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM to mark the Cyber Awareness Month. This year's agenda included a lecture by Adv Rajas Pingle, an International Cyber Law Expert, Cyber Crime, Privacy and Data Protection Lawyer, on how cybercrime investigation works and its intricacies.

The prime focus of the Lecture was to raise cyber awareness amongst the people and try to bridge the gap between the theoretical and practical approaches. As part of this lecture, Adv Rajas Pingle started with the Information Technology Act, its objectives, scope, and different chapters. In India, the Information Technology Act is the primary legislation governing cybercrime and electronic commerce. Traditional criminal crimes such as theft, fraud, forgery, defamation, and mischief, all covered by the Indian Penal Code, can be included in various cybercrime regulations. However, he claims that the majority of the offences listed by the Information Technology Act are bailable. Only a few violations under the IT Act are non-bailable, that includes Sections 67(a), 67(b), 66(f), and 70.

He further pointed out that cyber jurisdiction is not explicitly mentioned in the IT statute. Rapid technology advancements, state-to-state physical boundaries, and other problems are all difficulties that the court faces. He then went on to discuss various cybercrime provisions, including section 43, which deals with the penalty and compensation for computer damage; section 65, which deals with source code theft; section 66, which deals with computer-related offences; and section 67, which deals with transmitting or publishing obscene material. And, depending on the offence committed, the penalty for violating these provisions will range from 2 to 7 years in prison and a fine of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, or both.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr Sanjay Bang, Associate Professor, School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus. Mr Pranshu Khurana and Ms Isha Johnson, members of the Cyber Law Committee hosted the Guest lecture. Mr Tanzeel Sarwar introduced the Speaker. The vote of thanks was extended by Ms Mehak Vohra, Assistant Professor, School of Law, on behalf of the School of Law.
