Ethics in AI
The Centre for AI, in association with the School of Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organised an awareness session on “Ethics in AI” on 28 August 2026. The session was organised to sensitise students to the ethical, social, and responsible dimensions of Artificial Intelligence and to encourage them to engage with emerging technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way people learn, work, communicate, conduct research, and solve problems. From Generative AI and intelligent assistants to automated decision-making systems, AI has become an important part of contemporary academic, professional, and social environments. While these technologies offer significant opportunities for innovation and development, their growing use also brings several ethical challenges. Issues related to privacy, fairness, bias, transparency, accountability, misinformation, data security, and responsible decision-making have therefore become increasingly important.Recognising the need to create awareness among students, the session provided an opportunity to explore these ethical dimensions of AI. The discussions focused on the importance of understanding not only what AI can do, but also how and why it should be used responsibly. Students were encouraged to consider the potential impact of AI-based systems on individuals and society and to recognise the importance of human values in technological development.
A key focus of the session was responsible AI usage. Students were encouraged to critically examine the information generated by AI tools rather than accepting AI outputs without verification. The importance of human judgement, originality, privacy, and accountability while using AI in academic and professional contexts was also emphasised. This helped students understand that AI should function as a responsible technological aid rather than replacing critical thinking and human responsibility.
The session also addressed the significance of fairness and transparency in AI systems. Students were introduced to the possibility of bias in AI-generated outcomes and the importance of using reliable and responsible data. Discussions around privacy and data protection further highlighted the need for caution when sharing personal or sensitive information with AI-powered platforms.
The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to participate actively, share their perspectives, and reflect on real-world situations involving AI. This provided them with an opportunity to connect theoretical understanding with practical concerns and to develop a more balanced perspective on the opportunities and challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence.
The programme aligned with the University's commitment to holistic education, value-based learning, professional responsibility, and social contribution. It supported the development of students who are not only technologically aware but also capable of understanding the wider consequences of technological choices. The session encouraged values such as integrity, fairness, accountability, responsibility, respect for privacy, and concern for societal well-being.
The initiative also contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education by enhancing students' AI literacy, critical thinking, digital awareness, and understanding of contemporary technological issues. It further supported Sustainable Development Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by promoting awareness of responsible innovation and highlighting the importance of ethical considerations in the development and adoption of emerging technologies. The session contributed to the University's objective of preparing students for an increasingly technology-driven world by strengthening their ability to make informed and responsible decisions. It also reinforced the role of education in ensuring that technological advancement remains aligned with human values and societal needs.
Through initiatives such as the Ethics in AI session, the Centre for AI, in association with the School of Sciences, continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage with emerging technologies from both technological and human perspectives. The programme served as an important step towards developing responsible AI users and future professionals who can contribute to innovation while recognising the ethical responsibilities associated with Artificial Intelligence.
