Peitho Cup 2026

Peitho Cup 2026 – The Second Edition was organised by the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, on 3 and 4 October 2026. The two-day event featured the Asian Parliamentary Debate Competition along with the Reporter’s Showdown Competition, bringing together debating enthusiasts for an intellectually stimulating and competitive experience. The event provided a platform for participants to engage in structured discourse, articulate diverse viewpoints and demonstrate their analytical and communication abilities. In accordance with the strategic mapping of the event, Peitho Cup 2026 was aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 – Quality Education and SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, reflecting its emphasis on experiential learning, critical thinking, informed dialogue, responsible communication and effective advocacy.

The event commenced with a formal inauguration, followed by successive competitive rounds comprising the Octa-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals. The Asian Parliamentary Debate format provided participants with opportunities to engage with diverse contemporary issues through structured argumentation, rebuttal and spontaneous responses under limited preparation time. Participants were required to analyse issues from multiple perspectives, identify the strengths and limitations of competing arguments, construct logical narratives and respond effectively to opposing viewpoints. The competitive environment encouraged participants to think independently while simultaneously working collaboratively as a team. Consequently, the competition strengthened a range of transferable skills, including critical thinking, analytical reasoning, persuasive communication, teamwork, adaptability, public speaking and decision-making under pressure. By creating an experiential learning environment beyond the conventional classroom, the competition contributed directly to SDG 4 – Quality Education, particularly through the development of higher-order thinking, communication and problem-solving abilities.

An important aspect of the competition was the role played by the adjudicators, who evaluated the performances of the participating teams across different stages of the tournament. Their engagement contributed to maintaining the academic rigour and competitive standards of the event. A major highlight of Peitho Cup 2026 was the Final Round, which was adjudicated by Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar, former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. His presence added significant academic and professional value to the competition and provided the finalists with the opportunity to present their arguments before an eminent jurist with extensive experience in law and the judiciary. The event proposal records Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar’s extensive professional experience, including his service as a judge of the Delhi High Court and Punjab and Haryana High Court and subsequently as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. His involvement in the Final Round enhanced the learning experience for participants by bringing a distinguished judicial perspective to the culminating stage of the competition.

The involvement of an eminent judicial personality also reinforced the event’s alignment with SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Parliamentary debating encourages participants to examine competing perspectives, substantiate claims with reasoned arguments and engage constructively with disagreement. Such engagement promotes an appreciation of dialogue, reasoned decision-making and the role of institutions in addressing complex legal and societal issues. The event therefore went beyond competition by encouraging participants to recognise the importance of informed discourse, respectful disagreement and effective advocacy in academic, legal and public settings.

Running alongside the debate competition, the Reporter’s Showdown introduced an innovative analytical journalism dimension to Peitho Cup 2026. Participants acting as reporters engaged with the debates from an observational and analytical perspective, critically questioned speakers and prepared written news articles based on the proceedings.

This component complemented conventional debating by developing participants’ abilities in critical questioning, issue identification, analytical observation, logical synthesis, concise writing and neutral reporting. It also required participants to listen carefully to competing arguments and communicate complex discussions in a clear and structured manner. In this respect, the Reporter’s Showdown further advanced SDG 4 through skill-based and experiential learning while supporting SDG 16 by encouraging responsible communication, informed discourse and critical engagement with diverse viewpoints.

The event concluded on 4 October 2026 with the Final Round and the Valedictory Ceremony, marking the culmination of two days of competitive and intellectual engagement.

Overall, Peitho Cup 2026 successfully provided an academic and competitive platform for strengthening argumentation, analytical reasoning, communication, advocacy and journalistic skills. It facilitated meaningful interaction among students, debaters and adjudicators while promoting a vibrant culture of debating and intellectual exchange. Through its emphasis on quality learning, critical inquiry, constructive dialogue, responsible communication and effective advocacy, Peitho Cup 2026 meaningfully contributed towards SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, while strengthening the culture of academic engagement and competitive debating at the University.
