Industry Spotlight Session — Data Science: Career and Experiences

The Department of Statistics and Data Science, School of Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, organised an Industry Spotlight session titled “Data Science: Career and Experiences” on 15 October 2026 at 11:00 AM. Held in Room No. 3401 at Christ College Pune, the session featured Mr. Rehan Guha, Principal Data Scientist at Vodafone, Pune. Through examples from his professional experience, he offered students an opportunity to explore how data science is applied to practical problems across different fields.

The session centred on projects that Mr. Guha had worked on and the thinking behind the solutions he developed. His account connected the challenges encountered in a project with the process of arriving at a solution. This gave the discussion a practical focus, allowing students to consider how the concepts they study relate to situations faced by professionals. The emphasis on the journey from a problem to its solution provided a useful perspective for students preparing to undertake their projects.

Telecommunications was one of the main areas discussed during the session. Drawing on his experience, Mr. Guha spoke about problems in the telecom sector and explained how he approached them. These examples introduced students to the importance of understanding the context of a problem before deciding how to address it. They also offered a way to connect classroom learning with the demands of an industry in which data plays a significant role.

The discussion also covered projects involving financial problems. By sharing experiences from both telecommunications and finance, Mr. Guha illustrated the variety of settings in which data science can be applied. For students, this provided an opportunity to reflect on how problem requirements differ across sectors. The examples encouraged attention to the purpose of an analysis and the reasoning that connects a challenge to a suitable solution.

Another notable part of the session was his account of work on a Mars rover project. This added a space exploration dimension to the discussion and broadened the range of applications presented. Alongside the telecom and finance examples, it offered students a glimpse of the diverse projects that can form part of a data scientist’s professional experience.

Student participation was a prominent feature of the session. Students asked numerous questions, which Mr. Guha addressed, creating an active exchange around the experiences and projects he shared. The interaction gave participants space to seek clarification and explore aspects of the discussion that interested them. It also made the session an opportunity for direct engagement with an industry professional.

By bringing together project experiences, approaches to solving problems, and an interactive discussion, the session offered students a practical view of work in data science. Its value lay in connecting academic learning with accounts of professional practice across several domains. The Industry Spotlight session provided a meaningful platform for students to learn from Mr. Guha’s experiences, reflect on their own approach to projects, and develop a broader understanding of the possibilities within the field as they continue their academic work and prepare for future professional roles.
