Harmony Meets Precision: Inside the Integrated Music Leadership Masterclass at CHRIST Lavasa

When the art of choral singing meets the dynamic energy of a live band, the result is more than just sound—it is an exercise in collective leadership, technical balance, and performance excellence. From October 1st to 3rd, 2026, the Student Welfare Office (SWO), in collaboration with The Lavasa Music Academy, hosted the "Integrated Music Leadership Masterclass: Advanced Choral Pedagogy & Contemporary Band Dynamics" at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus.

Led by distinguished industry experts Mr. Abhishikth G. John and Mr. Nikhil Thykattil Sebastian, this intensive three-day dual-track event transformed how student musicians, choristers, and technical crews approach live music execution.

A Dual-Track Approach to Ensemble Excellence

Organizing a large-scale ensemble requires bridging vocal mechanics and live sound engineering. To address these distinct demands, the masterclass operated across two specialized tracks before integrating participants for a final closing performance lab.

  • Track A: Choral Pedagogy — Focused on human voice physiology, breath efficiency, intonation, and sectional harmony. Participants explored the Four Stages of Singing—Focus, Alignment, Breath, and Resonance—learning physical techniques to eliminate vocal fatigue and enhance tonal blend.
  • Track B: Contemporary Band Dynamics — Centered on stage acoustics, live mixing, frequency carving, and rhythm section tightness. Student bands and technicians tackled instrument bleed, acoustic balance, in-ear monitor (IEM) setups, and professional tech rider design.

Daily Journey: From Sunrise Warm-ups to Stage Synthesis

The workshop kicked off on Day 1 with an exploration of the CHRIST University Choir (CUC) history and ethos, setting the foundation for stagecraft and vocal mechanics.

Day 2 opened with "The Sound of Sunrise," an outdoor acoustic session designed to train active listening and natural vocal resonance. Participants then entered deep technical drill-downs, with bands aligning kick-bass sync and choristers perfecting harmonic balance.

On Day 3, both tracks converged in the main auditorium for an Integrated Closing Lab. Student vocalists and band members applied their training in real time—adjusting monitor mixes, managing dynamic shifts, and balancing delicate vocal layers over heavily amplified instrumentation.

Strategic Impact & Industry Alignment

Beyond musical skills, the masterclass fulfilled key educational and societal goals:

  • NEP 2020 Alignment: Advanced holistic, skill-based arts training by bridging academic learning with industry-level live production.
  • SDG Contributions: Supported SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being) through vocal hygiene and strain prevention, SDGs 4 & 8 (Quality Education & Employability) by equipping artists with technical stagecraft, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) via the SWO and Lavasa Music Academy collaboration.

Looking Ahead

The success of the masterclass establishes a benchmark for future co-curricular music initiatives at CHRIST Lavasa. With plans to institutionalize annual workshops, archive session recordings, and build a digital repertoire library, the campus continues to cultivate well-rounded musical leaders equipped with the technical excellence and creative mastery required for professional stages worldwide.

Special thanks to facilitators Mr. Abhishikth G. John and Mr. Nikhil Thykattil Sebastian, alongside faculty in-charge Ms. Jake S. Thomas, for bringing this transformative artistic vision to life!
