Bhashadaan 6.0

On 27th April 2026, the Department of English and Cultural Studies organised a Bhashadaan awareness session for first-year BBA and MBA students. The session was designed to introduce students to the concept of Bhashadaan and highlight its relevance in the areas of language, digital participation, and inclusive education, while fostering a broader commitment to lifelong learning opportunities.

The session opened with an engaging introduction that demonstrated how translation tools can effectively bridge language barriers in everyday life. Using the relatable example of a person unfamiliar with Hindi employing digital tools to both speak and understand the language, the facilitator immediately captured student interest and made the concept accessible to a diverse audience. This opening set a strong foundation for what followed, as real-life examples were then used to deepen student understanding and help them connect the idea of digital language tools to their own lived experiences.

Building on this foundation, the session transitioned into a detailed explanation of Bhashadaan itself, linking the practical use of translation tools to the broader principles of language contribution and preservation. Students were introduced to the idea that language is not merely a vehicle for communication but a vital aspect of cultural identity. More significantly, they were encouraged to reimagine their own role in relation to technology — not simply as consumers of digital platforms, but as active contributors to the preservation and enrichment of linguistic diversity. This reframing proved to be one of the more thought-provoking aspects of the session.

The session then moved into an exploration of the various tools available within the Bhashadaan platform. Each tool was introduced and explained in terms of its functionality and the specific benefits it offers to users. To ensure that this segment remained interactive rather than purely instructional, students were invited to respond to prompts and questions displayed directly on the platform. The response was enthusiastic, with many students actively selecting languages such as Marathi and Hindi. This participation made the session more inclusive and personally relevant, while also giving students a practical, hands-on understanding of how the platform operates in real time.

Engagement was further deepened when students were tasked with validating entries from their own native languages, assessing whether the transcriptions had been rendered accurately. This segment generated considerable enthusiasm, with students not only completing the task but also sharing translations with one another, creating a collaborative and mutually enriching learning environment. The exercise effectively reinforced the session's central message by placing students in the role of language contributors rather than observers.

The session concluded on an enthusiastic note, with students expressing genuine eagerness to continue contributing to Bhashadaan and actively participating in the preservation of linguistic diversity through digital platforms. Overall, the event successfully achieved its objective of building meaningful awareness about Bhashadaan among first-year students. The thoughtful combination of explanation, demonstration, and interactive activity ensured that the session was both informative and impactful, leaving students with a clearer understanding of how they can actively participate in preserving linguistic diversity through digital means.
