Hands-on Training Session on IEEE–IEEE Computer Society Digital Library (CSDL)

The Library and Information Center, in association with the School of Sciences, Christ University, Lavasa Pune Campus, successfully organized a Hands-on Training Session on IEEE–IEEE Computer Society Digital Library (CSDL) on 27th March from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Auditorium, Management Block. The session aimed to familiarize students and faculty with advanced research tools and digital resources available through IEEE-CSDL, enhancing their academic and research capabilities.

The event commenced with a warm welcome and introductory remarks by Mr. Santosh, Librarian, who highlighted the importance of digital libraries in modern research and the need for students to stay updated with evolving technological resources. The session was conducted by Mr. Gaurav Date, Training Specialist (West India), who served as the resource person for the training.

Mr. Date began by providing an overview of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), tracing its history from 1884 to the present, emphasizing its continuous technological advancements and global impact. He introduced participants to the IEEE Computer Society Digital Library (CSDL), explaining that it comprises a vast collection of books, journals, and magazines, including 46 top magazines, some dating back to 1970.

The training session focused on practical aspects of accessing and utilizing the CSDL database. Participants were guided on how to access the platform through IP-based systems and informed about future access through Knimbus. Mr. Date demonstrated how users can create personalized alerts by selecting specific research interests and keywords, enabling them to receive monthly updates on relevant topics. This feature was highlighted as a valuable tool for staying current in one’s field of study.

He further explained the advanced search strategies within CSDL, including the use of Boolean logic, filters such as year range, author, institution, and publication title, as well as identifying top global research trends through the “Top 15 Searches” feature. Participants were also introduced to the “My Research Project” feature, which allows users to create a customized virtual repository of research topics.

In addition, the session covered features such as accessing current and most cited articles, tracking citations including patent citations, and downloading up to 10 articles at a time with CSV files. Mr. Date also demonstrated how users can access supplementary materials such as datasets, media, videos, and code, which can be edited and reused for research purposes. He highlighted the availability of “Future Work” sections in articles, which can serve as inspiration for student projects.

The session also introduced participants to the IEEE Author Center, which provides tools, tutorials, and guidance for aspiring authors interested in publishing with IEEE. Information regarding conferences, including themes, venues, and important dates, was also shared.

An interactive question-and-answer session followed, where participants clarified their queries regarding database usage. To enhance engagement, Mr. Date conducted a quiz, in which more than 40 students participated enthusiastically. The top five performers were awarded IEEE-branded gifts, including pens, diaries, and water bottles.

As a token of appreciation, the Library and Information Center and School of Sciences felicitated Mr. Gaurav Date for his valuable contribution. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Swati, Library Assistant, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, organizers, and participants for making the event a success.

Overall, the training session was highly informative and interactive, equipping participants with essential skills to effectively utilize IEEE-CSDL for academic excellence and research development.
