DEAR(Drop Everything And Read)
The Library & Information Center, in association with The Readers Club, successfully organized the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) initiative as a day-long silent reading activity aimed at promoting the habit of reading and encouraging a culture of focused learning. The event was conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing participants the flexibility to join at their convenience and engage in uninterrupted reading for a minimum of 20 minutes or for extended durations.
The Central Library Reading Hall was thoughtfully arranged to create a calm, quiet, and comfortable environment conducive to deep reading and concentration. Participants either brought their own books or selected reading materials from the library’s diverse collection. The reading materials included academic texts, novels, biographies, autobiographies, and self-development books, catering to varied interests and preferences.
A special effort was made by the Library Team and The Readers Club to curate and display a wide range of books for the initiative. The selected books were systematically arranged genre-wise, including categories such as self-help, success stories, horror/crime, romance, fantasy, classics, non-fiction, mythology, biography, and autobiography. The collection featured books in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, and Marathi, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all participants. With the support of Ashiyana Library, an additional collection of Hindi language books was made available, enriching the reading experience. To maintain the spirit of distraction-free reading, a unique initiative was introduced wherein participants were encouraged to keep their mobile phones aside. A designated box was placed for voluntarily depositing mobile phones, which helped create a focused and digitally detoxed reading environment.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 66 individuals, including students from Christ University, students from Dasave Public School, and members of the local community, including participants from Ashiyana. The diverse participation reflected the widespread appeal and success of the initiative.
As a token of appreciation, all participants were awarded participation certificates. Additionally, selected participants were specially recognized and honored with books as gifts. Among those appreciated were Miss Jiya and Mr Abhinav from the School of Law, as well as staff members Miss Alphonso and Miss Munira Kachwala. Furthermore, each participant received a pen sponsored by IEEE Publications, adding value to the experience.During the event, the Library & Information Center and The Readers Club also took the opportunity to honor the winners of the “Ink of Justice: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Memorial Handwritten Essay Competition” in the presence of Fr. Justin P. Varghese, Academic Coordinator, Christ University Pune Lavasa Campus.
The DEAR initiative received highly positive feedback from participants, who appreciated the opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse themselves in reading. The event successfully fostered a reading culture, encouraged mindfulness, and highlighted the importance of books in personal and academic growth.
