The Great Debait
The competition centered around the thought-provoking topic, "Should equality mean identical treatment for all genders?" This theme provided participants with a platform to engage in a nuanced exploration of equity versus equality, addressing the complexities and broader social implications of these concepts. With 16 participants representing various departments, the debate showcased diverse viewpoints, allowing students to deliberate on whether true equality necessitates identical treatment or if fairness should accommodate differences in needs, opportunities, and circumstances.
The participants exhibited outstanding rhetorical skills, presenting well-researched arguments backed by data, historical context, and real-world examples. The structure of the competition included an initial round where participants presented their stance, followed by an intense rebuttal session where they countered opposing viewpoints with logic and evidence. The rigorous discussions reflected a deep understanding of the subject and highlighted the significance of considering social, cultural, and economic dimensions while advocating for gender inclusivity.
The debate was judged by two esteemed academicians, Prof. John Steward and Prof. Stuti Soumya, who brought their extensive expertise in gender studies, social sciences, and public policy to the evaluation process. Their insightful feedback emphasized the importance of adopting a balanced approach—one that integrates logic with empathy—to address gender equity issues effectively. They commended the participants for their clarity of thought, structured arguments, and confident delivery while offering constructive criticism to help them refine their analytical and public speaking skills further.
To incentivize excellence and recognize outstanding performances, a total prize pool of ₹3000 INR was allocated for the winners. The adjudication criteria included clarity of argument, persuasive delivery, depth of research, and the ability to counter opposing perspectives effectively. The announcement of winners was met with enthusiastic applause, acknowledging the dedication and intellectual acumen of the top contenders.
With free registration, The Great DeBait was designed to be accessible to all, encouraging broad participation and ensuring a diverse range of perspectives in the discourse. The successful execution of the event was made possible through the meticulous planning and coordination of Prof. Pallavi Pandey, under whose guidance the organizing committee ensured a seamless flow of activities. Student coordinators Devika Sajeev (6BCOM A) and Ankita Debnath (6BCOM B) played a crucial role in managing logistics, participant engagement, and audience interaction, ensuring the event's success.
