Online Colloquium on ‘Are Vice Crimes?’
The Student Bar Association of the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus organized an online colloquium on the topic ‘Are Vices Crimes?’ in collaboration with South Asia Students for Liberty. The event was organized on September 04, 2021, from 10:00, am – 04:00 pm.
The colloquium was moderated by Ms. Raufa Shaikh, Regional Coordinator, South Asia, Students for Liberty. At the onset of the colloquium, the moderator explained the various facets and rules of the colloquium. A reader, pertaining to the topic was provided beforehand to the students to enhance the quality of the discussion.
A group of 21 student participants and a total of 204 student viewers attended the session through zoom and discussed the tonalities of the topic. To ease the flow of the discussion, it was largely compartmentalized into four sections – Against Autonomy: Justifying Coercive Paternalism; Vices Are Not Crimes; Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do; Whither Equality?
The Moderator for the colloquium expertly navigated the discussion and made the students ponder upon the question ‘are vices crimes?’ while exploring the general distinction between vices and crimes. The students, through this colloquium, explored the intricacies and overlapping scope of morality, vices, and crimes.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Daisy Alexander and Ms. Raufa Shaikh was introduced as the Moderator. The vote of thanks was extended by Ms. Chhavi Pathak, on behalf of the School of Law.
