INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES - 2021

The Litigation Committee of the Student Bar Association, School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa conducted a Judgement Deliberation session on four controversial judgements in the domain of family law- marriage equality, marital rape, domestic violence and Universal Civil Code. The event titled, 'The Court is in Session' was held on Saturday, 15 May 2021 at 12:30 PM.

Family is an integral part of everyone's life. The United Nations (UN) realized this during the 1980's, when it began focusing its attention on issues related to the family. 15 May was proclaimed as The International day of families by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. The dynamics of the kin are rapidly changing leading to differing opinions as to what the family is and what the law governing such a personal relationship should be.

The event commenced by the welcome address delivered by Prof Dr Daisy Alexander, Head of the Department, followed by an address by the Director, Rev Dr Fr Jossy P George. The event progressed with the deliberation of four landmark judgements; Mohd. Ahmed Khan v Shah Bano Begum (AIR 1985 SC 945), Madhu Bala v State of Uttarakhand (Habeas Corpus Petition No 08 of 2020), Independent Thought v  Union of India (W P No 382 of 2013) and S R Batra v Taruna Batra [(2007) 3 SCC 6]. The deliberation was moderated Ms Harshi Tolia, Ms Chhavi Pathak, Ms Lavanya Garg and Mr Prateek Singh. The student panelist were Rashi Ashok Thakur, Kritika, Aeron Abraham Thomas, Himika Sarkar, Brinda, Jaya, Vishnu, Samradhi, Sandhya B, Sakshi, Aashina, Monalisha, Reonia Mathew, Shubham Singh, Karthik Anand and Roshni Kumar.
