International Day of Democracy: A Socratic Discussion on Democracy


The Student Bar Association of the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus organized a Socratic Discussion on Democracy and Indian Judiciary on September 15, 2021 at 11:15 AM to 13:10 PM to celebrate the International Day of Democracy. Established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, it encourages governments to strengthen the democratic process. Since the day was first observed in 2008, hundreds of parliamentary events have been held worldwide. To commemorate the 2021 edition of the International Day of Democracy, Student Bar Association, School of law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa is organizing a Socratic Discussion titled “WE THE PEOPLE” on the topic “DEMOCRACY AND THE INDIAN JUDICIARY” to commemorate International Day of Democracy. The event would primarily discuss the intersection topic with primary reference to the landmark cases of ADM Jabalpur V Shivkant Shukla and K S Puttaswamy V Union of India.

A group of 6 students volunteered to deliberate on the aforementioned judgments while an additional 200 students joined in on the conversation. They attended the session through zoom and discussed the tonalities of the topic.



The moderator for the colloquium expertly navigated the discussion and made the students ponder upon the topic. The students, through this colloquium, explored the intricacies and overlapping scope of the role of the judiciary in a democracy.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr Salu D’souza, Mr Karthik Anand moderated the discussion and Dr Sunil John extended the concluding remarks. The vote of thanks delivered by Ms  Amrutha Valavi, on behalf of the School of Law.
