‘Managing’ Social Sciences & ‘Socializing’ Management

The School of Business and Management (MBA), CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Lavasa Campus, organised an online motivational session on 11th Sept. at 11AM; the target audience being the first and fifth trimester MBA students. The speaker was Dr Devanjan Khuntia, Assistant Professor, Sharda University, Delhi-NCR and the topic was ‘Managing’ Social Sciences & ‘Socializing’ Management.

The event started with a minute of silent prayer as 1st trimester student Renisha Geraldin welcomed the guest speaker, the faculty members, and the students. Dr Devanjan gave an introduction about the topic and the subtopics to be covered in the session. He talked at length about five primary social institutions - Family, Education, Religion, Economy and Polity. After that, he defined ‘Economy’ and different questions we should ask ourselves to understand the concept of economy.

He made the students aware of different ideologies for framing economy. Then, he explained the connection between religion and economy and also mentioned a book “The Protestant Ethic & the Spirit of Capitalism”. He discussed the key ideas by the author Max Weber and concluded that societies having more Protestants are those who have a more developed ‘capitalist’ economy. Then, he moved on to the top 10 business leaders in the world and elaborated on the similarities among them. He also explained how media is influenced by caste. He deliberated on sustainable goals everyone should have which has to be achieved by 2030.

The talk was followed by the Q & A session. The students enthusiastically participated in the session and asked interesting questions. Dr Devanjan said that whatever ideology we follow, sustainability should be the main goal. He concluded the Q & A session with explaining the concept of Substantivism and Formalism with the transformation that has happened in India and suggested how we need more women in the workplace until they reach higher level of management.

The event ended with Hemanath proposing the Vote of Thanks.
