Psychology of Lasting Change

The Department of English, Lady Amritbai Daga College of Arts, Commerce and Science, successfully organised an insightful online lecture on the theme “Psychology of Lasting Change.” The session was conducted by the CAPS faculty mentor and trainer, Ms. Mansha Sawal, who brought forward an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the science and art of sustaining meaningful personal and professional transformation.

The lecture aimed to address a fundamental yet often overlooked question: Why do individuals struggle to remain consistent in their goals and habits despite having the best intentions? Through her talk, the speaker highlighted the importance of self-awareness, clarity in setting goals, and the psychological mechanisms that support long-term change.

At the outset, she underlined the necessity of goal-setting with precision. Instead of vague aspirations, learners were encouraged to frame concrete, realistic, and measurable goals. She explained how clarity in goal-setting serves as a compass that enables individuals to direct their energy productively. Goals, she emphasized, should be supported with a structured roadmap that breaks down larger ambitions into smaller, actionable steps. This makes the process less overwhelming and significantly enhances the chances of achieving sustained progress.

A key focus of the session was the discussion on habit formation and consistency. The faculty co-ordinator shed light on the psychological process by which habits are formed and reinforced. She emphasized that habits serve as the building blocks of lasting change because they operate at a subconscious level. Once ingrained, habits help individuals conserve willpower and remain consistent even in the face of challenges. She further elaborated on strategies to avoid breaking habits, such as starting small, using cues or triggers, maintaining accountability, and practicing self-compassion in case of setbacks.

The lecture also drew attention to the common pitfalls people encounter while trying to bring about change in their lives. Procrastination, lack of discipline, and unrealistic expectations often derail progress. To overcome these hurdles, she recommended cultivating a mindset of persistence and resilience. By reframing failures as learning experiences rather than permanent setbacks, individuals can continue to strive towards their desired outcomes.

In addition, the speaker introduced practical techniques such as visualization, journaling, and tracking progress as tools that reinforce motivation. She also stressed the importance of surrounding oneself with a positive and supportive environment that encourages discipline and growth. Importantly, the talk underscored the role of patience, reminding participants that real change does not occur overnight but requires consistent effort over time.

The session was interactive, with participants actively reflecting on their own experiences with setting and maintaining habits. The speaker’s relatable examples and accessible explanations made complex psychological concepts easier to understand and apply in daily life.

In conclusion, the lecture on “Psychology of Lasting Change” served as a valuable learning experience for all attendees. It not only provided theoretical insights into the psychology behind goal-setting and habit formation but also offered practical strategies for implementation. The session successfully motivated students and faculty members to rethink their personal approaches to change, encouraging them to embrace consistency, discipline, and resilience. The Department of English, through this initiative, reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing holistic growth in students by connecting psychological insights with real-life applications.
