Ortus

The Department of English and Cultural Studies at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, warmly welcomed the incoming batch of postgraduate students with its annual freshers’ celebration, Ortus 2025, held on 11 September 2025 at 6:00 PM in the Smart Room, Management Block.

The name Ortus, derived from the Latin word for “rising” or “beginning,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of the event: a symbolic dawn of new opportunities, friendships, and academic journeys. More than just a festivity, Ortus served as a carefully curated platform for students to connect with their peers, seniors, and faculty members, fostering an atmosphere of belonging, creativity, and joy.

The evening commenced with a warm address by faculty members, who highlighted the significance of new beginnings and encouraged the students to embrace the vibrant intellectual and cultural life of the department. The welcoming words set the tone for an evening filled with laughter, bonding, and memorable experiences.

To break the ice and create an environment of camaraderie, the celebration featured a series of engaging games and activities. Teams were quickly formed, encouraging interaction among students who were meeting each other for the first time. Pictionary brought out the artistic creativity of participants, with teams sketching and guessing their way to victory amid enthusiastic cheers and laughter. Charades, with its lively acting and clever interpretations, proved to be a crowd favorite, sparking moments of humor and spirited competition. Adding variety to the mix, several card games were organized, offering a more relaxed setting where students could converse freely while enjoying the friendly contests.

The interactive nature of these activities not only helped students feel at ease but also highlighted the spirit of inclusivity and teamwork that the department seeks to nurture. It was heartening to witness students from diverse backgrounds come together, discovering shared interests and forming the first bonds of what promises to be a strong and supportive cohort.

No celebration is complete without food, and Ortus 2025 was no exception. A pizza dinner was arranged, providing the perfect accompaniment to the lively conversations and cheerful atmosphere. The highlight of the evening came with the cutting of a beautifully decorated cake.  The delightful spread helped bring everyone even closer together. Students and faculty enjoyed a delicious dinner, creating a warm and informal space for conversations beyond the activities. To mark the joyous occasion, the celebratory cake was shared, adding a sweet note to the night’s festivities and symbolising the beginning of new friendships and memories.

As the evening drew to a close, the joy in the room was palpable. Smiles, laughter, and warm exchanges marked the success of the event, reaffirming the department’s commitment to building a vibrant community of learning and creativity. Students expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful organization of the party, which not only welcomed them into the academic fold but also created lasting memories from their very first week.

In essence, Ortus 2025 was more than just a freshers’ party—it was the foundation of new friendships, the spark of future collaborations, and a celebration of possibilities yet to unfold. The Department of English and Cultural Studies looks forward to carrying this energy forward, ensuring that the journey ahead is as enriching as its beginning.
