Unlocking Opportunities in the Banking Industry

The School of Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus, in collaboration with the School of Management, organized an Expert Talk Session on 25 August 2025. The session was specially designed to bring academic and industry perspectives together, offering students an opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the banking sector. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from second- and third-year students of BSc Data Science, Economics & Analytics, and BCA programs, all eager to learn from an accomplished industry professional.

The distinguished resource person for the session was Mr. Vivek M. K., Assistant General Manager and IT Security Expert, Reserve Bank of India. With an illustrious career spanning institutions such as the Export-Import Bank of India and the South Indian Bank, Mr. Vivek brought with him a wealth of experience and nuanced understanding of the financial services industry. His expertise in banking operations, compliance, and IT security gave students a holistic perspective on the sector’s current and future landscape.

The primary objective of the Expert Talk was to familiarize students with the dynamic career opportunities within the banking industry while highlighting the technological and structural transformations underway. With rapid developments in compliance mechanisms, digital transformation, IT security, and analytics-driven strategies, the financial services sector has become a multidimensional field that increasingly welcomes graduates from varied academic backgrounds. The session, therefore, was tailored not only to commerce and management students but also to learners from science, technology, and analytics-based programs.

Mr. Vivek commenced his talk by sharing his personal journey in the banking industry. This narrative served as an inspiring example of how perseverance, continuous learning, and adaptability can shape a successful career. He then elaborated on the skills and competencies that students should focus on to excel in the sector. In particular, he emphasized the value of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy. Further, he provided detailed guidance on the various competitive examinations and professional certifications that open pathways to specialized roles in banking and financial services.

A significant highlight of the session was Mr. Vivek’s explanation of the evolving role of IT security and cybersecurity in the financial ecosystem. He underscored how data has become the most valuable asset in today’s world, making security and analytics indispensable to modern banking operations. By illustrating the direct link between technical expertise and banking functions, he reassured students from non-commerce streams that their skills are highly relevant to this industry. His insights helped bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling students to understand how classroom learning can be applied in real-world financial settings.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where students posed insightful questions regarding career progression, skill development, and sectoral trends. Mr. Vivek patiently addressed their queries, providing practical advice and encouragement. His interactive approach ensured that students felt connected and motivated to explore the diverse opportunities the banking sector offers. The Expert Talk proved to be highly enriching. It not only broadened students’ awareness of the multifaceted career prospects in banking but also highlighted the growing demand for professionals with interdisciplinary knowledge.
