One day workshop on Professional Etiquette and Transformation

In today’s dynamic professional environment, academic knowledge alone is not sufficient to prepare students for successful careers. The ability to communicate effectively, present oneself professionally, demonstrate confidence, and navigate interpersonal situations is equally important. Recognising this need, a one-day Professional Etiquette and Transformation Workshop by Ms Rashmi Saha, Life coach and Clinical Psychologist, was organised for first- and second-year B.Com students to help them develop essential professional and personal competencies required for academic, internship, industry, and career settings.

The workshop was designed as an experiential learning initiative that moved beyond conventional classroom instruction. It focused on key areas such as communication skills, professional etiquette, confidence building, grooming, body language, interpersonal skills, self-awareness, and workplace behaviour. Rather than simply discussing what constitutes professional conduct, the sessions encouraged students to experience, practise, observe, and reflect on these behaviours.

The interactive nature of the workshop created an engaging learning environment. Through practical activities, discussions, role plays, demonstrations, and experiential exercises, students were encouraged to examine how their verbal and non-verbal communication influences the way they are perceived by others. Particular attention was given to aspects such as introductions, professional conversations, active listening, appropriate body language, personal presentation, and responding confidently in professional situations.

An important component of the workshop was **self-reflection**. Students were encouraged to identify their existing strengths while recognising areas that required further development. This reflective approach helped them understand that professional transformation is not about changing one's personality but about becoming more conscious of one's behaviour and learning how to adapt appropriately to different contexts.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of professional etiquette in everyday interactions. Students explored how seemingly simple behaviours—punctuality, respectful communication, appropriate appearance, attentiveness, courtesy, and responsible workplace conduct—can contribute significantly to professional credibility. These discussions helped connect classroom learning with situations students are likely to encounter during internships, interviews, group projects, presentations, and their future workplaces.

For first- and second-year students, such exposure is particularly valuable as they begin preparing for internships and progressively transition from an academic environment to professional settings. The workshop provided an opportunity to understand that employability extends beyond technical or disciplinary knowledge. How one communicates, collaborates, responds, listens, and presents oneself can significantly shape professional interactions.

The experiential approach further enabled students to learn through participation rather than passive listening. By practising professional behaviours in a supportive environment, students could experiment, receive feedback, and reflect on how they could improve. This helped foster greater confidence and awareness while reinforcing the importance of continuous personal development.

The Professional Etiquette and Transformation Workshop therefore served as a bridge between academic learning and real-world professional expectations. It encouraged students to look beyond marks and qualifications and recognise the broader competencies required to navigate contemporary professional life. By combining practical learning with reflection and participation, the workshop sought to empower students to enter internships, interviews, academic interactions, and workplaces with greater confidence, awareness, and professionalism.

Ultimately, the workshop reinforced a simple but important message: professional transformation begins with self-awareness, and professional excellence develops through conscious practice.
