Session on Financial Literacy

Financial awareness is an essential life skill, particularly for young adults preparing to transition from higher education into the professional world. Recognising the importance of equipping students with practical financial knowledge, the Centre for Placement and Career Guidance (CPCG), in collaboration with the Department of Commerce, organised a Financial Literacy Session on 11 September 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Management Block.

The session was designed as a skill development programme to help students develop a functional understanding of personal finance, financial decision-making and long-term wealth management. As students move towards their professional careers and begin managing their own income and financial responsibilities, awareness of budgeting, savings, investments and risk becomes increasingly important.

The session addressed the need for practical financial education in an environment where young professionals are increasingly exposed to diverse digital financial instruments, changing market conditions and early financial commitments. Through the programme, students were encouraged to look beyond simply earning an income and understand the importance of managing, saving and investing money effectively.

The session covered several fundamental aspects of financial literacy. Students were introduced to the role and importance of money, income, savings and wealth creation, along with the importance of setting clear financial goals. A key focus was the distinction between saving and investing, helping students understand why long-term investing is important and how inflation can affect purchasing power over time.

Another important area of discussion was active and passive income. Students explored different sources of income and the importance of developing multiple income streams as part of the broader journey towards financial independence. The session also introduced students to various investment avenues, including bank deposits, gold, real estate, equities and debt instruments, while highlighting the importance of comparing risk, liquidity and potential returns.

The concept of diversification and risk management was also discussed, emphasising the value of spreading investments and considering asset allocation while making financial decisions. Students were further introduced to the power of compounding, systematic investing and the benefits of starting investments early. The discussion on mutual funds and Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) highlighted the role of disciplined and regular investing in long-term wealth creation.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Abhinav D. Jog, a senior banker, academician, BFSI trainer, author and research advisor. With four decades of combined experience in academia and the corporate sector, Dr. Jog brought extensive expertise in banking, finance and professional education to the session. His experience includes senior management at the State Bank of India, teaching in the field of finance, and extensive engagement as a BFSI trainer and subject matter expert.

Designed as an interactive presentation with examples and a quiz, the programme aimed to make financial concepts accessible and relevant to students. By the end of the session, students were expected to gain a stronger understanding of investment fundamentals, inflation, diversification, risk management, compounding and systematic investing, while developing a basic framework for personal financial planning.

The Financial Literacy Session reflects CPCG’s commitment to supporting students beyond conventional placement preparation by strengthening practical competencies that contribute to informed decision-making and professional readiness. The initiative also aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, reinforcing the importance of equipping students with knowledge and skills for responsible and sustainable participation in the professional and economic environment.
