Understanding the Securities Market
The Centre for Placement and Career Guidance (CPCG), in collaboration with the School of Business and Management – BBA, organised an industry expert talk titled “Understanding the Securities Market” on 11 September 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Management Block. The programme was organised as part of the academic year 2026–27 with the objective of providing students with practical insights into the functioning of the securities market and connecting academic concepts with contemporary industry practices.
The contemporary financial ecosystem is witnessing rapid technological integration, evolving regulatory requirements, and increasing participation in capital markets. While students receive foundational knowledge of finance and commerce through their academic curriculum, understanding the practical functioning of financial markets requires exposure to real-world operations. Areas such as market microstructure, order execution, equity valuation, risk management, and regulatory compliance are particularly important for students preparing for careers in the financial sector. The programme was therefore designed to address this gap by facilitating direct interaction with an experienced industry practitioner.
The session introduced students to the structural framework and operational mechanisms of primary and secondary capital markets. Discussions focused on the roles of stock exchanges, depositories, clearing corporations, and regulatory bodies in ensuring the effective functioning of the securities market. Students also explored various financial instruments, including equities, fixed-income instruments, and derivatives, with emphasis on their operational characteristics and risk-return profiles.
A key focus of the programme was understanding market risks and portfolio diversification. Students were introduced to systemic and unsystematic risks and encouraged to consider appropriate risk mitigation and diversification strategies through practical market scenarios. This helped participants understand how financial decisions involve balancing potential returns with associated risks.
The session was led by Dr. Abhinav D. Jog, Senior Banker, Academician, BFSI Trainer, Author, and Research Advisor. Dr. Jog brings four decades of combined experience in academia and the corporate sector. He began his career with the State Bank of India and worked for over two decades in senior management, gaining expertise in corporate finance, trade finance, rural banking, retail banking, and stressed asset management. He also gained international banking experience during his three-year stint at the SBI Osaka, Japan Branch.
Dr. Jog has more than eleven years of teaching experience and has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Finance at Indira School of Business Studies, Pune. He has authored books on Banking, serves as a Finance Subject Matter Expert, and is a Certified Master Trainer in BFSI. He was also awarded the National Award for Best Master Trainer (Kaushal Acharya Award) by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship in 2020.
The programme also highlighted career opportunities in capital market-related domains, including equity research, compliance, investment analysis, wealth management, and financial advisory services. Students were encouraged to identify the professional certifications, analytical tools, and competencies required to pursue entry-level opportunities in the sector, including relevant NISM modules.
The sessions were conducted for first-year BBA students through interactive presentations, practical examples, and a quiz, encouraging active participation and application of concepts.
Overall, “Understanding the Securities Market” provided students with valuable industry exposure and a practical perspective on financial markets. The initiative strengthened the connection between academic learning and professional expectations while supporting students in developing financial awareness, market understanding, and career readiness. The programme also aligned with SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, reflecting the University's commitment to industry-aligned and career-oriented education.
